Magdalena Abakanowicz was born on June 20th. She is a contemporary Polish sculptor and fiber artist.
Magdalena is best known (at least here in Chicago) for the installation pictured above entitled; Agora. This piece features 106 cast iron figures that stand about 9 feet tall. They don't have heads making them anonymous and feeling directionless. The figures are similar in a lot of ways but each has a unique texture that gives them individuality.
"Art needs somebody to listen to its message, somebody to desire it, somebody to drink it, to use it like wine - otherwise it makes no sense." -Magdalena Abakanowicz
