In a previous position, I was responsible for kiln operation. I miss the warm kiln on a winter morning and the anticipation of seeing how the pieces turned out after firing.

The ceramics process can be such a dichotomy....

  • the artwork might blow up in the kiln OR come out of the kiln as expected
  • the artist must pound the clay to knead it AND move gently to lift it on the wheel
  • the clay needs to be worked with quickly while wet BUT then the artist needs to be patient during drying and firing

It seems these opposing methods create a balance that make ceramic artists some of the most passionate I've worked with.

With opposing forces in mind, here are some ceramic inspiration where artists mix the media with fiber arts.
