Painter Alice Neel was born on January 28th. Her artistic career spans from the 1920's-1980's. She is best known for her expressive portraits where her distorted proportion and use of line exposed the psychological fragility of her subjects.
Alice Neel painted the female nude as something other than a sexual object. Instead she embraced their natural forms. Her nude paintings of pregnant woman were groundbreaking at the time, she painted them as an honest recognition of that phase of life.
"It's a privilege, you know, to paint and it takes up a lot of time and it means there's a lot of things you don't do. But still, with me, painting was more than a profession, it was also an obsession. I had to paint."
