Messy Research On Messy Behaviors
Some points raised in the interview include:
- questioning the connection between efficiency and creativity
- is creativity magic, passion, a gift or blessing
- creatives need to be comfortable being a minority of one
The topic of a messy mind and creatives being comfortable with non-linear thinking and failing lead me to the book Messy by Tim Harford.
The video below briefly describes his theory embracing messy environments. Sharing that they leave the most important information on the top, and that the visibility of lots of bits of information can lead to new ideas because the activity in a creative brain is...messy.
In the video he talks with Brian Eno who designed a deck of cards each with an abstract direction on them (see example below). They're called Oblique Strategies and they're meant to embrace chaos in order to help you create new connections between ideas. The deck can be pricey but I also find it available as an app! I got the app and will let you know if they prove helpful.
So there ya go a pretty messy blog post about messy brains!
