Painter Elaine Fried de Kooning was born on March 12th. She was a teacher, writer, and one of the strongest Abstract Expressionist portrait artists.
An aspect of her paintings that resonates with me is her ability to focus the viewers attention. While all colors and brushstrokes are present to evoke a mood she also chooses a key element to focus attention on. That focused element is painted in a strong, bold, and clear manner.
"A painting to me is primarily a verb, not a noun, an event first and only secondarily an image."
