Hayv Kahraman creates powerful paintings with a strong design aesthetic as well as a surreal and symbolic reference to her native Iraq.

I'm fond of the symbolism and surreal nature of her paintings. She uses personal experiences and observations as the conceptual root of her work. These paintings beautifully connect visual aesthetics such as the designs from mashrabiya screens, a women's perspective of events, and even activities the artist participated in often such as card games.

She states that there are two issues that recur in her work; migrant consciousness and gender. All images posted here are from her website which I suggest you check out. On it she goes into greater detail on the influences of her series of works.
