Today, I spent some time with the quietly intense portraits of Celia Paul.
Celia Paul started a long relationship with Lucien Freud when she was only 18. Already being an established artist he had an influence on the development of her work and style. In a few cases she created her own interpretations of his work.
She is well known for a series of portraits she did of her mother and now paintings of her sisters. It's interesting that she works with the same subject over time. Her soft handling of the paint and subtle unusual color choices make a moody composition.
