The Intense Collages of Martha Rosler
There are many examples of contemporary collage art online. However, few carry with it as strong a message as the work of Martha Rosler.
Rosler collaged in protest of the Vietnam War. She photocopied her work and passed them out at demonstrations. Decades later she revisited this same technique to protest the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.
Much of Rosler's work centered on feminist themes and she considers these works as much about feminism as anti-war. By adding images of war into the pages of home decorating magazines she highlights how removed we are from the hurt experienced by others. War is present but we don't think of it as being in our living rooms present in OUR everyday experience.
Rosler's exhibition, The Living Room War was on display at the Getty earlier this year. Click here to learn more about her work in the exhibition and hear her audio interview.
