Happy Birthday: Maybelle Stamper
Maybelle Stamper was born on June 21st. She is well known for her lithographs and unique lifestyle.
Maybelle studied and exhibited her art in New York in the 1930's and taught at the Cinncinnati Art Academy. She gained a solid foundation for her art career. However, in the early 1940's she visited the Captiva Island off the Florida Coast and made that her home for the rest of her life. At that time there were only 100 permanent residents on the island. Living there she adopted a solitary life. She lived in a house alone with her cats and made privacy a top priority. There were other artists who over time made the island their home as well including Robert Rauschenberg. He respected her work and helped support her so she could continue making her art in solitude.
I'm especially fond of the pieces above, they remind me of Odilon Redon (sorry poor image quality from the estate's website).
