Happy Birthday: Edmona Lewis

Edmona Lewis was a sculptor born on July 4th, who overcame a lot of obstacles to pursue her art.

Edmonia Lewis was of African American and Native American descent. Her parents passed away when she was very young. She was raised by her older half brother and her Chippewa relatives. While living there her name was Wildfire and she spent her days producing moccasins. Later, she discovered sculpture and pursued a degree and career in the medium. After several controversies and facing racial tension she moved to Rome where she also benefited from the readily available marble.

She sounds like a very brave and passionate artist I'd love to learn more about her so I've added this book to my list.

"I thought of returning to wild life again; but my love of sculpture forbade it."
