Happy Birthday: Alice Baber

Happy Birthday: Alice Baber

Alice Baber was an Abstract Expressionist painter born on August 22nd.

I found this transcript of an interview with the artist. The interview reveals her attraction to an independent life but with a wealth of knowledge gained from conversations with other artists.

She believed in creating work unlike anything you've seen before, understanding your materials, and allowing a piece to be done when it's ready to be done. She didn't believe a piece was more important because it took longer or was meticulously planned.

"At the point that you save [a painting] is when it's not a piece of wallpaper". -Alice Baber

I like the ideas from the quote above that a heavily planned piece becomes boring. It doesn't become alive until the artist saves it from total failure.
