Happy Birthday: Betty Voorhis Cornell Benton
Betty Voorhis Cornell Benton was born on February 5th. She is an American painter and collage artist best known for being Joseph Cornell's sister. However, she was quite a skilled artist herself.
As always, I couldn't find too much on her but I did find this interview with her from 1976. In it she describes while growing up she was considered the budding artist of the family. Her brother Joseph was interested in movies and Houdini. When 10 she was sent to art lessons with Edward Hopper. He eventually declined to teach her further because he said she was "too silly". Her brother's art career eventually over shadowed hers but she continued to create. It seems the two collaborated since the piece below is credited to both artists.
Below are some of her pieces that embrace a surreal or collage aesthetic.
Below is the Cornell family. Elizabeth is on the far left and Joseph on the far right.
