Portrait Drawing Love

In case it wasn't obvious I love portrait drawing. I recently spent some time looking at the portrait drawings of Elizabeth Peyton. Peyton is one of the most successful contemporary portrait artists around. She's depicted royalty, celebrities, and her intimate circle of friends.

Observing her subjects through photographs lead to blurry settings and unusual lighting. By accentuating this she has created a unique aesthetic that is focused yet layered.

Technically, there's a lot of great examples in her drawings. Notice her varying line weight, the change in contrast, and the directions of her lines. She uses all of these decisions to direct the viewers eyes and attention.
