Happy Birthday: Elisabetta Sirani

Elisabetta Sirani was an Italian Baroque painter; whose early death limited the work produced by this groundbreaking artist.

During this period women weren't allowed in the art schools or to study nudes. Sirani, like many I've researched, was then trained by her father who was an artist. She did quite well in her art career being commissioned for portraits and murals for churches.

Eventually, she was one of few women who was admitted into the art academy. At only 27 she died from peritonitis but some speculate she was poisoned. One of her last projects was opening an art school for women through which her teaching and methods lived on beyond her short life.
