Happy Birthday: Doris Leeper

Doris Leeper is a contemporary sculptor born on April 4th.

Leeper was originally studying to become a brain surgeon resulting in her nickname "Doc". Instead, she graduated with a degree in Art History and moved to Florida. Once there she became increasingly interested in environmental conservation. By the mid-1970's she helped found the Canaveral National Seashore and later helped establish the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Her efforts have preserved natural resources and provided thousands of artists with opportunities to study their art. Her own artwork is quite minimalist and geometric. It's featured in over 100 permanent collections.

"If you had a world with no music, no dance, no visual arts — I don’t even want to try and think about how horrible that would be." ~Doris Leeper
